Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education 

PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) is an integral and key aspect of the teaching, learning and ethos at Endeavour Trust. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to ensure the children are taught the knowledge and life skills they will need to stay safe and develop healthy and supportive relationships. Growing up in a world that is not only continuingly changing but becoming an ‘online’ civilization, it is essential that we equip children with the necessary skills to become resilient, caring and respectful young people. At TILA, we believe in providing our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.

To ensure progression and a spiral curriculum, we use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and tailor it to the children’s needs. The Jigsaw programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through scheme of work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.

SRE

The PSHE curriculum also includes the teaching of Relationships and Sex Education. This statutory element will help the children to develop safe and healthy relationships throughout their lives. At TILA, we encourage children to express their emotions appropriately, develop empathy and learn about the importance of looking after their physical and mental health.

Children at Fonthill explore their place in the world and their own unique identities within it.  In line with British Values, children are taught to respect the different cultures both within the local community and worldwide, and how to celebrate these differences.  At Fonthill, we value the importance of wellbeing and how positive physical and mental health choices can impact this.

In line with the Fonthill READS curriculum, PSHE is taught through:

Remember— Children are taught to remember different strategies for dealing with conflict and resolving issues that they may have.  They address certain safety rules (eg.  Medicine safety, e-Safety) using resources such as the individual Jigsaw characters and Smartie the Penguin.

Explain—Children are able to explain what makes them unique and given a range of strategies (talk box, opportunity in class) to identify a feeling and explain what may have given them that feeling, and what they might to help themselves work through it.

Apply—Children are taught to apply strategies they have learnt for calming conflict (mindfulness, breathing, solve it strategy) and recognise the impact they and their behaviour might have on another child.

Develop— Over time, children develop a strong moral compass and an ability to empathise with others.

Share—Children have safe spaces in the classroom where they can discuss anything that may be worrying them.  Class work is shared and celebrated in class PSHE books and acts of kindness are celebrated in each classroom with a kindness jar.  Children should be able to freely share their feelings and feel safe and happy in the school environment.

 Our Scheme of work (Jigsaw) contains 6 units of work which are studied by all year groups including Early Years. This enables themes to be shared and celebrated by the whole school.

The weekly themes within each unit form the basis of weekly assemblies and lessons across the school. Weekly celebration certificates recognise effort, positive attitudes and achievement of the weekly themes by members of every class.
