Maths

At Fonthill, we are committed to developing confident and capable mathematicians. We use the White Rose Maths scheme to provide a structured and engaging approach to learning, ensuring that children build strong foundational skills and develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Our teaching follows the "I do, we do, you do" approach, a structured method that gradually builds independence and confidence in solving mathematical problems.
  • I do: The teacher introduces a new concept by modelling it step by step, explaining their thought process as they work through examples. This helps children see the correct methods and strategies in action.
  • We do: The class works together on similar problems, with the teacher guiding and supporting students as they develop their understanding. This collaborative stage allows children to ask questions and practice with help.
  • You do: Pupils apply their learning independently, solving problems on their own. This stage ensures they have grasped the concept and can use it confidently in different contexts.
This approach ensures that all children receive the support they need while also building their ability to work independently over time.
In Year 4, pupils take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), a national assessment designed to ensure children have a secure recall of their times tables up to 12 × 12. We provide regular practice opportunities through engaging activities and online resources to help pupils build confidence and fluency in multiplication. A strong grasp of times tables supports many areas of maths and helps children tackle more complex problem-solving with ease.
